GEI Consultants opens fourth Michigan office

LANSING, MICH. — GEI Consultants of Michigan, Inc. announced the opening of a new office in Lansing as it continues to expand its services throughout Michigan, the upper Great Lakes region, and across the Midwest. An affiliate of GEI Consultants, Inc., the companies provide civil, geotechnical, environmental, water resources engineering and ecological services.

Located on Washington Square in the heart of Michigan’s capital city, GEI’s Lansing office is situated in close proximity to several municipal and state agencies. Jamie Matus, C.P.G., a 28-year consulting engineering veteran with expertise in geotechnical and environmental engineering, leads the new Lansing office as branch manager.

The Lansing office is GEI’s fourth in Michigan. Since 2010, GEI has established eight offices throughout the Midwest providing public and private clients with integrated civil, geotechnical, water resources, environmental, and ecological services. The company works on a variety of project types in the region, including municipal infrastructure; flood control; energy and mining; transportation, including freight rail; property transaction due diligence; private development and brownfields redevelopment; institutional facilities construction and rehabilitation projects; underground engineering; construction oversight; and more.

“GEI has worked with more than 250 clients on more than 500 projects across the Midwest in the past year,” said Michael Gatzow, senior vice president and GEI’s central region manager who is based in Michigan. “We expect our Lansing office will become a significant presence in Michigan’s capital city, and around the state and region, as we continue our growth and expansion plans.”

The following key leaders will be responsible for shaping the development of the Lansing office:

Jamie Matus, C.P.G., Lansing branch manager, has more than 28 years of experience with complex geotechnical, environmental, and construction-related projects. Matus’ environmental background includes site assessments and hydrogeological investigations leading to innovative remediation solutions for public and private clients. Throughout his career, Matus has also taken the lead on numerous domestic and international projects involving geological and geotechnical engineering for both underground structures and high-rise buildings. He has more than 20 years of experience in the evaluation and management of coal combustion residuals and has provided consulting services to major power producers in the Midwest. Matus also has more than 15 years of experience managing and directing geotechnical evaluations for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit and Chicago Districts. He holds a Bachelor of Science in geological engineering from Michigan Technological University. He is a member of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Association of Engineering Geologists (AEG), and the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG).

Ryan Holem, senior consultant, is a project scientist with more than 12 years of experience and training in environmental toxicology, zoology, and fisheries and wildlife. Holem has both field and laboratory research experience in support of ecological and human health risk assessments of aquatic and terrestrial environments. His project experience includes work with the fate of seleniums, dioxins, furans, and PCBs. Holem also has experience with mining operations and oil spill response. He holds a bachelor’s degree in zoology from Michigan State University, and a master’s degree in toxicology from the University of Georgia.

Carlin Grundemann, P.E., is a project manager with a diverse background that includes geotechnical and civil engineering work, light rail projects and landfill closure plans. Grundemann has provided subsurface investigations and recommendations to a variety of clients, including municipal entities, energy and industrial companies, and transportation agencies. She has also supported dam and levee projects for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers around the Great Lakes for the Corps’ Detroit, Chicago, and Louisville districts. A member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Council of Engineering Companies, the Society of American Military Engineers and the Association of State Dam Safety Officials, Grundemann holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Michigan Technological University.

Ron Erickson, P.G., is a senior consultant with more than 40 years of engineering geology experience. His expertise includes site investigations, armor stone and materials evaluation, soil and rock anchors, dam and levee evaluations, slope and foundation problems, dredging and waterfront construction, and laboratory testing of soils and materials. Prior to joining GEI, Erickson was a geologist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Detroit district and most recently spent seven years as a consulting geologist. Throughout his career, he has been involved in numerous geotechnical investigations programs for navigation, flood control, dam safety, and environmental related projects. He also has significant dam and levee experience and was the program manager for dam safety for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Detroit district, managing inspections and education and training programs. Ron is a registered professional geologist with the state of Indiana and holds a bachelor’s degree in geology from Western Michigan University.
