Kleinfelder selected for major wastewater treatment plant upgrade

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — Kleinfelder was selected by the Ewing-Lawrence Sewerage Authority (ELSA) in Lawrenceville, N.J., to design a significant upgrade to its 16 million-gallons-per-day (mgd) wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The upgrades will address new effluent limitations, aging infrastructure, high wet weather flows, and the need to enhance preliminary treatment performance. The total project cost is estimated at approximately $25 million; design began February 1, 2013.

Kleinfelder’s current scope of services include: design, permitting, and financing assistance as well as bidding/award assistance, which total approximately $1.34 million. Kleinfelder’s future services will include construction administration.

For nearly 20 years, Omni Environmental, LLC (Omni) — who was acquired by Kleinfelder in November, 2012 — has had a strong relationship with ELSA, providing regulatory support on a wide range of significant issues. Omni also developed the initial facilities plan, which established the recommended improvements, and when it came time to propose on the design of these improvements, the addition of Kleinfelder’s resources and diverse suite of services played an integral part in being selected for the project.

“Omni’s long-standing relationship with ELSA put us in a great position, but ultimately, it was Kleinfelder’s significant resources that enabled us to demonstrate we could meet a very aggressive project schedule, which was key to being selected for this important assignment,” said Timothy Bradley, vice president at Kleinfelder/Omni.

The improvements to be designed include new UV disinfection, effluent pumping, and preliminary treatment facilities, as well as replacement of numerous mechanical and electrical systems and equipment. Design and permitting are expected to be complete in September 2013. Bidding and award assistance are expected to be complete in December 2013.
