Patrick Engineering sells energy affiliate to SAIC

LISLE, ILL. — Patrick Engineering completed the sale of its affiliate, Patrick Energy Services, to Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). SAIC said that the acquisition will enhance its energy and smart grid services portfolio, adding transmission and distribution engineering services to the company’s existing capabilities in the market. As a result of the deal, approximately 200 employees will join the SAIC Energy, Environment & Infrastructure, LLC, subsidiary.

With 2010 revenues in excess of $100 million and more than 500 employees, Patrick Engineering and its affiliated companies, including Albin Carlson & Co., Patrick Construction Corporation, and Dietzler Construction, have continued to grow and diversify nationally. Revenues of the Patrick affiliated companies are projected to be close to $100 million in 2011, excluding revenues from the Energy Services affiliate. More than 60 percent of Patrick Engineering’s and Patrick Construction’s revenue for 2011 will be derived from projects outside Patrick’s home state of Illinois. Patrick has active contracts in 28 states and 2 Canadian Provinces.

A partial list of noteworthy Patrick Engineering and Patrick Construction projects under contract include design and/or construction of:

• new intermodal rail facility in North Carolina;
• wind farms in five states;
• Chicago-to-St. Louis high-speed rail project;
• jet fuel truck to train loading facility in Michigan;
• rehabilitation of the Lock De-Icing System at Sault Sainte Marie, Mich.;
• AMTRAK station upgrades in the Pacific Northwest;
• campus-wide electrical upgrade projects for The Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati;
• projects for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in multiple states;
• new river bridge in a remote part of Alaska;
• water projects in Texas and Colorado related to shale oil drilling; and
• ongoing work for Idaho National Labs, Argonne, and Fermi Labs.

Locally, Patrick Engineering is part of a joint venture designing the widening and rebuilding of Interstate I-80 in Will County as well as various projects for O’Hare Airport, the city of Chicago, the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority, and Metra. In Wisconsin, Patrick is working on numerous highway and infrastructure projects.

The sale of Energy Services follows the 2007 separation of the company’s planning and design work for investor owned utilities such as Exelon, Progress Energy, PacifiCorp, and ITC Transmission Corp. into the stand-alone company Patrick Energy Services. Patrick Energy Services grew to employ nearly 200 engineers working on the design of transmission, substation, and smart grid projects across the United States.

Daniel Patrick Dietzler, P.E., and the 350 Patrick affiliated company employees who are not part of this transaction will continue to grow operations with focus on the design and construction of infrastructure, including rail and water transportation loading facilities, locks and dams, bridges and pipelines, campus, industrial, and water resource projects.
