Gannett Fleming project honored by Cuban American Association of Civil Engineers

MIAMI —” Gannett Fleming, an international planning, design, and construction management firm, was honored with the Project of the Year Award during the Cuban American Association of Civil Engineers’ 50th Annual Engineers Gala Banquet.

The Project of the Year Award recognized the NW 74th Street from NW 107th Avenue to NW 87th Avenue project in Miami-Dade County, Fla. Alina Fernandez, P.E., a project manager for the Highway Section in the Miami office, accepted the award on behalf of Gannett Fleming. Fernandez served as the project manager for this traffic and operational improvement project.

Gannett Fleming was responsible for the final design of 2 miles of this major arterial highway. The work involved the roadway design of a new six-lane divided road to provide a continuous corridor connecting the state Route 821/Homestead Extension of the Florida Turnpike with state Route 826/Palmetto Expressway. In addition to providing a vital link for these two major limited access roads, this project provided congestion relief to the city of Doral, Fla. and the town of Medley, Fla., and an improved connection to the Palmetto Metrorail Station for the residential areas of Doral and western Miami-Dade County.

The scope of services included drainage, wetland mitigation, permitting, utility relocation, lighting, signing, pavement markings, signalization, contamination assessment and remediation, as well as extensive coordination with adjacent projects. The project began in 2005 and was successfully completed on time and within budget in 2010.
