Hatch Mott MacDonald projects among Grand Award winners and national finalists in ACEC and ASCE Award competitions

MILLBURN, N.J. — Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) is proud to announce that the firm was awarded two Grand Awards at the 2010 American Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) and had two national finalists at the 2010 American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement (OCEA) Awards.

At the ACEC Gala, held April 27 in Washington, D.C., eight projects were recognized as Grand Award Recipients, two of which were designed by HMM — the Sea-to-Sky Highway Improvement project, and the Sound Transit Central Link Light Rail: Section 710 Beacon Hill Station and Tunnels project (designed with Jacobs Engineering). Also in Washington, D.C., the ASCE Award Gala was held March 25, and honored five projects as national finalists — the Sound Transit Central Link Light Rail: Section 710 Beacon Hill Station and Tunnels, designed by HMM, and the Arrowhead Tunnels Project, for which HMM performed construction management, resident engineering, and inspection services.

The $575 million Sea-to-Sky Highway Improvement project, a corridor upgrade which runs between West Vancouver and Whistler, B.C., Canada, was showcased to the world during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The Sound Transit Central Link Light Rail: Section 710 Beacon Hill Station and Tunnels project, an integral component of the new 16-mile Link Light Rail line that provides a vital link between downtown Seattle and SeaTac International Airport, includes twin shaft tunnels, which at 160 feet deep are the deepest soft ground tunnels in North America. The Arrowhead Tunnels project, part of the $1.2 billion Inland Feeder program, consists of two tunnels totaling approximately 42,000 feet of 12-foot diameter finished tunnel and 6,630 linear feet of 12-foot diameter buried pipeline. The tunnels were excavated simultaneously with custom-built, state-of-the-art Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) designed specifically for the difficult geologic conditions, including high water head, and demands anticipated for the project.
