The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is reducing speed limits on MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) in Wheaton and Silver Spring, Montgomery County. The changes are part of MDOT SHA’s bold new comprehensive urban mobility-focused program tailored to central business districts with dense populations and multi-modal transportation demands.
Speed limits set only five miles per hour below engineering recommendations produce a statistically significant decrease in total, fatal and injury crashes, and property-damage-only crashes, according to a group of Penn State researchers. However, if you lower the speed limit by 10, 15, 25 miles per hour, or more, drivers stop paying attention.
Cities across the U.S. lauded a report by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) that concluded that excessive speed is one of the most significant causes of both crashes and fatalities on U.S. roadways.
