Newport Road Bridge over CSX railroad project wins second award

NEWARK, Del. – Pennoni Associates, an ENR Top 100 engineering, design, and consulting firm with branch offices in Newark and Milton, DE, is pleased to announce the receipt of the ASHE First State Section’s Gold Award for the Newport Road Bridge over CSX Railroad project. This award recognizes outstanding work on projects involved in the Delaware transportation industry. Delaware Governor Jack Markel also signed a tribute for the project.

This is the second award for the project, which also won the American Council of Engineering Companies’ Delaware Chapter’s Honor Award for Engineering Excellence. A vehicular bridge commonly used by students as a walkway to commute between schools, the Newport Road Bridge over CSX railroad was a deficient structure further hindered by its lack of sidewalk and poor sight distance. The State of Delaware and CSX agreed it needed to be replaced, along with other existing bridges crossing CSX railroad. The Delaware Department of Transportation performed the design of the proposed bridge and the mechanically stabilized earth walls and engaged Pennoni to prepare the roadway design for the replacement structure that would meet standards and improve safety for drivers and pedestrians. Pennoni provided the preliminary design, final design, right-of-way design and coordination, construction consultation, as well as outreach to local stakeholders.

This award was given during the Project of the Year Presentation held at the Sheraton South in New Castle. Hosted by ASHE First State, the event salutes the accomplishments and skill Delaware’s transportation engineers.
