W. CONSHOHOCKEN, PA. — A watertight septic system ensures its integrity, and demonstrating that integrity is important because such systems have over time become more complex, expensive, and critical to both system owners and to the environment. A new ASTM International standard fills a need for an in-field installation test for septic systems.
The new standard, ASTM C1719, Test Method for Installed Precast Concrete Tanks and Accessories by the Negative Air Pressure (Vacuum) Test Prior to Backfill, was developed by Subcommittee C27.30 on Water and Wastewater Containers, part of ASTM International Committee C27 on Precast Concrete Products.
According to Michael R. Miller, quality manager, Press-Seal Gasket Corp., and a C27 member, ASTM C1719 will be used primarily by regulators, specifiers, progressive installers and purchasers.
“ASTM C1719 will allow regulators, usually state or county health departments, to require a standard performance level of installed on-site systems,” says Miller. “When vacuum testing was adopted by sanitary systems regulators, the quality of installed systems went up dramatically and their performance likewise improved.”
Now that ASTM C1719 has been improved, Miller says he hopes the subcommittee can help regulators become aware of, understand and begin to implement the new standard. All interested parties are invited to join C27.30.
