Michael Baker International ranked sixth-largest privately owned company in the Pittsburgh region

Pittsburgh — Michael Baker International moved up three positions in The Pittsburgh Business Times’ ranking of largest privately held companies in the region, based on 2015 revenues. The company is now ranked sixth in the Pittsburgh market.

“Michael Baker achieved significant growth in 2015 – both in Pittsburgh and across the world – and we look forward to continuing to build our brand and market presence in the years ahead,” said Kurt Bergman, CEO of Michael Baker International. “Our team members continue to serve as valuable partners to our Pittsburgh-based clients through a full continuum of services and innovative solutions. We are proud to be recognized on this list of leading companies in our hometown.”

The company, which employs more than 6,000 worldwide and 722 locally, saw a year-over-year increase in revenue, rising 20.6 percent to $1.29 billion. Projects in 2015 that contributed to this increase include:

• East Liberty Transit Center — The company partnered with the City of Pittsburgh and a host of other regional stakeholders on this $150-million project, which resulted in the construction of a multimodal transit center at the site of the former East Liberty Busway Station.  Michael Baker managed the construction of the center’s infrastructure, underground vehicle bicycle parking garages, pedestrian and bicycle bridges, and streets within the complex. The center now serves more than 800 bus arrivals per day and aims to shorten commutes and wait times for as many as 25,000 people who travel between Pittsburgh’s eastern suburbs and downtown.

• New services in oil and gas — Over the past several years, Michael Baker has expanded its services within the oil and gas market including the Marcellus/Utica Shale regions.  The company provides facilities operations and maintenance, station metering, pipeline mapping, surveying, permitting and design services for some of the region’s major exploration and production, midstream and transmission pipeline companies.

• Foreign Military Sales program — The Michael Baker Pittsburgh office continues to win projects overseas in support of infrastructure needs related to Foreign Military Sales. Key services of these foreign efforts, which are performed by Michael Baker’s Western Pennsylvania experts, include engineering, architecture and planning work related to site development, buildings, roadways and runways.

Additionally, Michael Baker was ranked by The Pittsburgh Business Times as the region’s number one environmental firm for the last decade and is ranked sixth on the architectural companies list, moving up two spots since 2015’s ranking. Michael Baker was also ranked as number 96 on the Fastest Growing Companies – The Pittsburgh 100 list.

“Our team members are our greatest asset at Michael Baker, and they are eager to partner with clients on new projects to exemplify how ‘We Make a Difference’ in the communities we serve,” added Bergman. “Together we will continue to play a crucial role in repairing the aging infrastructure here in Pittsburgh and across the nation and investing in our highways, bridges, airports, transportations centers and other key areas.”
