Kleinfelder acquires Simon Wong Engineering

SAN DIEGO — Kleinfelder, a global architecture, engineering and science consulting firm, acquired Simon Wong Engineering (SWE), a San Diego-based firm providing project management, structural and bridge engineering services, construction management and inspection services, and public relations support to the transportation and water markets in California. The transaction closed on Dec. 31, 2012.

“SWE’s strengths in the areas of structural engineering, bridge design and construction management, as well as their existing relationships and proven track record of high-profile project success, make them the ideal partner in the region,” said Bill Siegel, Kleinfelder CEO. “By bringing them on board, we are continuing to strengthen our talent pool and resources in order to better serve our global client base.”

Founded by Simon Wong, P.E., S.E., in 1986, Simon grew his business steadily over the next 26 years, and today the firm employs approximately 115 professionals in five offices throughout California, including San Diego (headquarters), Riverside, Los Angeles, Irvine and San Francisco.

“We take great pride in having grown our business over the years, and we expect that growth to continue with Kleinfelder,” said Wong, who will now serve as a vice president of corporate development at Kleinfelder, managing the SWE operations, assisting the integration and leading client and project pursuits throughout California. “We are a great fit for Kleinfelder, because our four divisions will easily assimilate into the company, providing both our clients and our employees the ability to leverage the benefits of a larger geographic footprint and more robust disciplinary capabilities available with the company.”

SWE is composed of four distinct divisions, including a structural division, which offers full-service structural engineering for a variety of public and private projects, both new and renovation; a bridge division, which offers full-service bridge and transportation-related consulting and design services; a dynamic construction management division, which offers full-service construction management and inspection services for all types of projects and through all phases; and a public relations division, which works to promote a positive public perception of the firm’s clients and their projects.

Wong and the firm’s staff will now become employee-owners at Kleinfelder, and the firm will operate as part of the Kleinfelder Group.
