GEI Consultants Inc. acquires BasePoint Design Corporation

DENVER — GEI Consultants Inc. acquired assets of BasePoint Design Corporation (BasePoint), a specialty consulting firm focused on dams and civil and geotechnical design engineering projects located in Aurora, Colo. Ying-Kit Choi, Ph.D., P.E., BasePoint’s founding principal and previous owner, joined GEI as a senior practice leader in the firm’s Denver, Colorado office earlier this year.

“BasePoint’s project work in dam design, dam safety and water resource civil engineering experience will be a strong complement to GEI’s dam engineering and water resource planning and engineering practices,” said Francis D. Leathers, P.E., president of GEI. “The firm’s depth of experience and client service adds to GEI’s long history of serving federal agencies, including the United States Army Corps of Engineers and many state and local agencies. This acquisition supplements GEI’s long-term strategy of attracting highly-skilled and distinguished experts to serve our core service areas.”

BasePoint’s primary clients included key U.S. Department of Interior Agencies, such as the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, and the National Park Service. In addition, the firm served private dam owners, architecture and engineering firms, municipalities and commercial developers. Choi is a noted authority in dam engineering and offers considerable knowledge and expertise that will strengthen GEI’s water resources and dam engineering practices, particularly in dam design, water supply and storage, and geotechnical engineering core services areas. Specifically, Choi brings significant experience working as the lead project manager on large-scale dam, dam safety, canal and geotechnical projects for numerous agencies.

Choi founded BasePoint in 1998. In its 13 years, the firm focused on dams and civil/geotechnical design engineering projects, ranging from dam designs, geotechnical engineering and canal inspections to dam-safety evaluations, feasibility designs, final designs, technical reviews, value engineering and construction-phase engineering. Between 2003 to 2011, BasePoint participated in three indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contracts with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Technical Service Center in Denver, Colorado and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Choi was a former employee of GEI Consultants from 1984 to 1994 prior to starting his own firm.
