GEI Consultants expands Washington, D.C. office

WASHINGTON, D.C. — GEI Consultants Inc. recently welcomed 10 new employees to its Washington, D.C., office. After establishing its mid-Atlantic presence to better serve clients located within the Washington Beltway, GEI has added these industry experts to work with office manager and GEI Vice President Giovanni Bonita, Ph.D., P.E., P.G, in expanding the breadth of technical services and geographic footprint of the firm’s operations.

GEI designed the excavation support system that protected the historic Capitol Building during the construction of the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, the largest project in the Capitol’s 212-year history, at approximately equal in size to the Capitol itself. GEI’s other geotechnical projects in the area include the Marriott Marquis Hotel, the Blue Plains Tunnel, and the Enhanced Nitrogen Removal Facility in Washington, D.C., and the Emergency Service Center at Fort Detrick in Fredrick, Md. The Washington, D.C. office has also been integral in securing, managing, and executing other GEI assignments, including the Army Corps of Engineers’ Center Hill Dam Rehabilitation in Tennessee and the Wolf Creek Dam Gallery and Plaza Grouting in Kentucky, two of the Corps most critical dam projects nationwide; the Hot Strip Mill Scale Pit in Calvert, Ala.; and the Vehicle Security Facility at the World Trade Center in New York.

Bonita, who joined GEI in 2007, manages the Washington, D.C., office and has extensive experience in complex underground structures, retaining systems, geological and geophysical investigations, and deep foundations. Over the course of his career, he has worked on many high-profile projects, and has used traditional and advanced analytical techniques to recommend and design excavation methods and foundation systems, including major public works projects with difficult engineering challenges.
