Balfour Beatty launches BIM4 Highways Group

London — Balfour Beatty welcomed more than 70 industry specialists to its head office in Canary Wharf, London, to launch the BIM4 Highways Group, which will look to understand the benefits and challenges of implementing Building Information Modelling (BIM) Level 2 in the road and highways sectors.

The launch saw discussion of the group’s mission, activities undertaken so far and goals for 2017 and beyond. It also explored how contractors can collaborate effectively with each other and their supply chain to overcome challenges and share good practice.

Balfour Beatty is at the forefront of utilizing BIM as one of only a handful of businesses to have achieved the British Standards Institute BIM Kitemark for excellence and the first contractor to achieve BIM Level 2 accreditation. Having now introduced BIM processes on over 100 projects, the company has been supporting its roads and highways partners to drive the use of BIM across the industry.

Harry Parnell, Head of Digital Project Delivery for Balfour Beatty’s major projects business, said: “It was an honor to host the inaugural meeting of the BIM4 Highways Group. We have been using BIM and promoting its awareness since 2010 and we see that there is a real opportunity to change the culture of project teams using the processes readily available to achieve better information management. We need to work together as an industry to share our experiences so that we can all capitalize on the benefits and that’s why the BIM4 Highways Group is so important.”

Balfour Beatty utilizes its digital toolset to develop an integrated approach across the project lifecycle. Through its investment in the latest technology and innovations the company will continue to drive the industry in the development and integration of BIM.
