Do you want to keep doing forever exactly what you are doing now, or do you have dreams or aspirations to do something else? Most people would answer the latter. So what are you waiting for?
Are you waiting for your next performance review to discuss this with your boss? Are you waiting for some magical moment when the universe tells you it’s time to make your move? Are you waiting for someone to pick you out of a line-up and promote you?
Waiting gets you nowhere in this industry. The good news for those who answered that they have dreams and aspirations is that most people wait, providing great opportunities for those who are impatient and don’t want to wait.
There are no career development plans or programs that really ever effectively draw out people and make them wildly successful. No, those plans usually create a very large group of average people waiting for opportunity. They all follow the program, together, putting all of themselves on a level playing field.
Most annual performance reviews are ineffective too because it is a check-the-box activity for most firms. If you want real feedback, you have to seek it all of the time, not wait for it once a year.
If you want real opportunity, you have to create it. A program or a single meeting will hardly create opportunity. The tendency to follow the program and wait for performance reviews creates an average career with average results.
Rules and programs are created as companies grow and need more control. More control leads to more average results. To go from ordinary to extraordinary, you must take control of your life and your career. If you don’t, there are programs and systems out there that will do it for you. Your choice.
