01. HDPE conduit guideline
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) published its new Guideline for the Selection and Installation of Smooth-wall Coilable High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Conduit, NEMA TCB 4-2016. Developed and written with the participation of the Plastics Pipe Institute, Inc. (PPI), it provides recommendations for selection, handling, and installation of underground HDPE conduit or raceway for power, lighting, signaling, and communications applications. HDPE conduit, including cable in conduit, is widely used in trenching, horizontal directional drilling, and plowing installations. NEMA TCB 4-2016 is available as a hard copy or as an electronic download at www.techstreet.com/standards/nema-tcb-4-2016?product_id=1949105.

02. Sprayable strengthening system
Simpson Strong-Tie said its new fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) can effectively repair, protect, and strengthen concrete and masonry structures for a fraction of the installed cost of traditional shotcrete repairs that use rebar. The FRCM externally bonded Composite Strengthening System combines high-performance sprayable mortar with a carbon-fiber grid that creates a thin structural layer without significantly increasing the structure’s weight or volume. FRCM can add flexural, axial, or shear strength to a range of structures. It is ideal for application on overhead or vertical surfaces in structures such as tunnels, mines, parking garages, silos, bridges, and other buildings with large surface areas.
03. Bike infrastructure design guide
The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) released guidance to help cities decide what types of bike infrastructure will best achieve their goals to build bike networks that are safe and comfortable for riders of all ages and abilities. The new guidance, Designing for All Ages and Abilities, builds on the organization’s Urban Bikeway Design Guide. By focusing on two key safety factors — vehicle speeds and traffic volume — in addition to design factors such as street width, Designing for All Ages and Abilities gives cities tools to assess any street and decide which treatments will improve safety and support increases in bicycling.

04. Rugged pocket penetrometers
ELE International offers two new rugged versions of its pocket penetrometers for field-testing concrete and soils. They are made from ground and polished stainless steel with a special wear-resistant coating to prevent rust. The new penetrometers also feature a calibrated spring, a new low-wear indicator ring to avoid scratching, and a carrying case. The soil pocket penetrometer evaluates consistency and approximate unconfined compressive strength of soils. It was developed for use by field personnel to check the visual classification of soils for construction purposes. The pocket penetrometer’s scale was originally developed (by ELE Soiltest) after compilation of several thousand unconfined compressive strength tests of various soil types.

05. Bridge repair products
Stronghold Coating Systems released a brochure that details its bridge repair technology, including MM 1018 load-bearing polymeric resid for steel bridge construction and repair; RepaCoat capillary action coating for repair of bridges and other infrastructure such as pipelines; and Kable N-Cor, which protects bridge cables and connector mechanisms from corrosion. The company’s Venturi spray system, which applies RepaCoat and other two-part products with zero-waste is also detailed. According to Stronghold, the products are ideal for application on new bridges as well as for repair of those in service. MM1018 has also been used on dams, oil rigs, power plants, and other critical applications with high loading.

06. Stormwater grates and guards
Haala Industries, Inc. said its stormwater and wetland management grates and guards provide a solution for pipe, manhole, culvert, and other drainage cover applications. Grates and guards are DOT approved in multiple states and produced to existing standards, allowing them to be easily incorporated into construction design plans, eliminating the need for contractor fabrication. Custom fabrication is also available to meet specific design requirements. Haala Industries’ line includes manhole grates, pond skimmers, flared end vehicle safety grates, trash guards, and more. Grates and guards can be made from domestic materials including galvanized steel, stainless steel, or aluminum.

07. Additives for water treatment
Cortec Corporation’s new brochure, VpCI Building Blocks and Additives for Water Treatment Formulations, focuses on prevention of corrosion and scale buildup in process water. Additives for boilers, heat exchangers, cooling towers, and condensate lines can be instrumental in lengthening the life of a system and reducing maintenance. Additionally, Cortec’s corrosion inhibitor additives make great building blocks for full water treatment formulations, the company said. VpCI molecules diffuse throughout the enclosed space and adsorb on metal surfaces below and above the surface of the water, forming a thin molecular corrosion-inhibiting layer that protects against oxygen, chlorides, and other corrosive elements.
08. ICC-certified helical piers
Cantsink Manufacturing said it is the only maker of helical piers at 16-inch and 19-inch diameters that offer certification from the International Code Council (ICC). Cantsink’s 2-7/8-inch HHS and its 1.5-inch RCS have received ICC certification after 20 months of testing, inspection, and published reporting. This new ICC-certified product line offers a wider range of options for tie back anchors, vertical and compression piles, and micropiles. Cantsink helical piers offer guaranteed stability for foundations, retaining walls, and other structures under a wide range of soil and weather conditions, the company said. Cantsink products are ideal for new construction as well as remedial stabilization.
