Alta Environmental contracted to monitor Port of Long Beach stormwater

Long Beach, Calif. — The Port of Long Beach (POLB) awarded a multi-year, $1,010,000 contract to Alta Environmental. Under this contract, Alta will help the Port and Port Tenants comply with the new California Industrial General Storm Water Permit (IGP) by implementing a stormwater monitoring program at 22 sites throughout the port complex. Alta will also provide strategic consulting, design and implementation, and an analysis of its findings, as part of the contract.

“Our studies, design and analysis will ensure that the POLB, handling over $180 billion in cargo annually, is in compliance with the new regulations,” said David Renfrew, director of water resources at Alta Environmental. “We are hoping to obtain meaningful, high-quality monitoring data to inform a strategy that will ultimately protect water quality and the local environment.”

Businesses and industrial activities at the Port are required to comply with the Clean Water Act Regulations, including the new IGP, which goes into effect July 1, 2015. The new permit requires industrial facilities to bolster their stormwater pollution prevention programs and monitoring requirements. The IGP also requires light industrial facilities, previously exempt from the requirement, to implement specific management measures.
