AISC and CISC partner to bring SteelDay 2010 across Canadian border

CHICAGO — During what one day of the year can you find a group of architects touring a state of the art fabrication site in Washington, a set of engineers viewing machinery demonstrations at a service center in Pennsylvania, a college class discovering how a steel mill in Texas produces structural steel products from recycled steel, and a collection of real estate developers marvelling at the technical sophistication of a detailer’s shop in Quebec, Canada? SteelDay, September 24.

Building on its inaugural success across the country in 2009, the AISC has named the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) an International SteelDay Partner. SteelDay has become a worldwide event that encourages architects, engineers, contractors, and specifiers to learn about steel design and construction by visiting steel facilities for free educational programs and networking activities.

"SteelDay is the industry’s largest networking and educational event [attracting more than 7,000 attendees at 170 different locations all over the U.S. in 2009], and we’re confident that it will have an even greater impact this year by reaching people on a global level," said Chris Moor, AISC director of industry initiatives. "By partnering with international steel related trade associations such as the CISC, we bridge the concept of SteelDay with the design and construction community around the world while providing tailored benefits and philosophies to each organization’s members."

This year’s SteelDay is expected to attract more than 10,000 participants at more than 200 events around the U.S. Members of CISC will also be hosting a variety of relationship building events and seminars around the Canadian provinces.

"The CISC saw the success of SteelDay 2009 and knew it was something we wanted to be a part of," said Jason Wood, CISC marketing director. "This is a fantastic program, allowing our memberships to demonstrate their strengths and capabilities they bring to the construction industry. Many stakeholders (design engineers, architects, developers) have never visited a facility before."

While connecting with local structural steel representatives, SteelDay attendees will learn how to use the structural steel industry’s advanced technologies and processes to reduce their risk and manage their costs while being sensitive to the environmental impacts of their projects.

CISC has launched a public SteelDay website page, www.steelday.ca, where attendees can learn about events happening in Canada and how to sign up.

In addition to collaborating with CISC, AISC is partnering internationally with Promozione Acciaio to bring SteelDay events to the design and construction community in Italy. Also, the American Galvanizing Association has teamed up with AISC to provide galvanizer tours and presentations around the United States.
