Earthquake expert Lucy Jones, Ph.D., joins SAFEq Institute’s advisory board

lucyjones-255Los Angeles — Lucy Jones, Ph.D., has been a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and a Visiting Research Associate at the Seismological Laboratory of Caltech since 1983. She recently retired from the USGS after 33 years of federal service. Jones now plans to help officials develop science-based policies related to earthquakes, climate change, tsunamis and other natural disasters through the Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society. Jones brings her vast expertise to SAFEq Institute’s Advisory Board.

“SAFEq Institute is extremely proud to have Lucy join our Board of Advisors. She brings a new perspective to our organization based on her work at USGS and the City of Los Angeles, as well as her experience successfully communicating scientific information to the public in ways that can be understood by all,” said SAFEq Institute Managing Director, David Cocke, S.E.

SAFEq Institute (www.safeqinstitute.com) is an expert resource for building owners, risk managers, engineers, and local jurisdictions seeking to minimize facility and business interruption losses caused by natural disasters. SAFEq Institute partners with owners to establish post-disaster response programs providing training and certification of individuals to execute emergency structural inspection and evaluation of buildings and other structures affected by disasters such as earthquakes.

In 2014, as Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Science Advisor for Seismic Safety, Jones led the Mayoral Seismic Safety Task Force in a year-long study of seismic risk in Los Angeles, resulting in the Mayor’s Resilience by Design report. The report included the basis for the recent Los Angeles’ seismic retrofit ordinances as well as a plan for a building occupancy resumption program (BORP) for the city. Jones has authored over 100 papers on research seismology with a primary focus on earthquake statistics and integrated disaster scenarios, especially in Southern California. Her work included leading the science projects that created the statewide ShakeOut Earthquake and ArkStorm Scenarios as well as the Great ShakeOut Drill.
