CDM Smith is harnessing the power of Microsofts HoloLens, a mixed reality technology, to help its clients design, build, and operate their infrastructure assets faster, more efficiently and with fewer errors. The firm announced that during the last seven months, it has been investing in mixed reality technology to determine the most relevant applications to large infrastructure projects.

AEC TECH NEWS: Off-Site Construction Council releases software utilization survey results

The National Institute of Building Sciences Off-Site Construction Council (OSCC) conducted a survey in the summer of 2015 to identify the types, frequency of use and effectiveness of software platforms being utilized by the off-site construction sector. A total of 22 participants, with more than half representing the architecture/engineering or general manager/general contractor disciplines, responded to the survey.

Hydro International acquired Hydro-Logic Ltd (trading as Isodaq Technology) and Hydro-Logic Services LLP, expanding its range of water quantity and water quality management products with the addition of monitoring products and data analysis and advisory services.

Topcon Positioning Group acquired a significant share of holdings in Viasys VDC, based in Espoo, Finland. Viasys VDC has developed a complete suite of tools and services to assist customers in building Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) models for infrastructure and site-work projects.

Hexagon AB, a global provider of information technologies that drive productivity and quality across geospatial and industrial enterprise applications, announced the acquisition of SigmaSpace Corporation, a provider of next-generation technologies used to rapidly deliver high-quality 3D maps of the Earth.

AEC TECH NEWS: Trimble acquires Sefaira Ltd.

Trimble announced the acquisition of London/New York-based Sefaira Ltd., a developer of cloud-based software for the design of sustainable and high-performance buildings. The acquisition of Sefaira expands Trimble’s Design-Build-Operate (DBO) portfolio to include tools for designing high-performing buildings early in the conceptual phase of a project. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

In early December at Autodesk University, Autodesk, Inc. announced Autodesk BIM 360 Docs, a cloud-based service for the construction industry that provides a virtual workspace to create, access, maintain, markup and share 2D and 3D project documents, plans and models.

Softree Technical Systems Inc. announced their acceptance into the Bentley’s Technology Partner Program. According to Softree principal, Dave Mills, P.Eng, the company plans to make Softree Optimal, their new vertical alignment optimization technology, directly available to Bentley civil users.

Trimble and Nucor extend collaboration in AEC markets

Trimble and Nucor Corporation announced a third, multi-year agreement to extend their collaboration in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) markets that began in 2009. Nucor, the largest steel producer in the U.S., will continue to build on its investment in Trimbles Tekla Structures Building Information Modeling (BIM) software.

AEC TECH NEWS: McClure Engineering Co. invests in 3D high-definition scanner

McClure Engineering Co. (MEC) purchased the Leica ScanStation P40 High Definition Scanner (HDS), which captures 1 million points per second at ranges of up to 270 meters. MEC is the first company in Iowa and Missouri, and one of the first in the Midwest to purchase this 3D scanner for use in engineering, architecture and surveying services.
