Mapping software for point cloud data
Based on rapid growth of terrestrial 3D laser scanning in civil/survey mapping applications, Leica Geosystems, which manufactures laser scanning products, and MicroSurvey Software, Inc., a developer of mapping software, announced that Leica Geosystems will resell MicroSurvey’s new PointCloud CAD mapping software on a global basis. The new PointCloud CAD software was developed by MicroSurvey using Leica Geosystems’ point cloud engine (pcE) technology to manage large laser scan data sets efficiently from any scanner or aerial LiDAR as users process point cloud data into mapping elements in the software’s final deliverables.

Engineers’ cross-disciplinary reference
PPI offers “Core Engineering Concepts for Students and Professionals” by Michael R. Lindeburg, P.E. The cross-disciplinary engineering reference contains civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, and industrial engineering subjects; features 82 chapters covering thousands of engineering topics; contains more than 580 examples with step-by-step solutions; references more than 3,700 engineering equations and formulas; and presents more than 315 figures and 780 tables.

3D roadway modeling tools
Bentley Systems, Inc., released InRoads Suite V8i (SELECTseries 1) and GEOPAK Civil Engineering Suite V8i (SELECTseries 1). The new releases include 3D information modeling tools for resurfacing, restoration, and rehabilitation, which are provided by Bentley’s patented Roadway Designer 3D parametric modeling capabilities. Additional software enhancements provide for the creation of Bentley i-models — a container for open infrastructure information exchange — and for the incorporation of i-model mark-ups.

Erosion control product line
Diversified manufacturer Leggett & Platt recently unveiled Landmark Earth Solutions’ product line, which initially includes ScourStop transition mat technology; Safe Slope hydraulically applied mulch; and BarriCage, a welded wire gabion system. ScourStop provides a no-maintenance, vegetated, NPDES-compliant alternative to rock rip rap for culvert outfalls, overflow structures, stream banks, bridge drains, and levee and shoreline protection. Safe Slope is a natural fiber hydromulch made from a blend of cotton plant byproducts, other crop residue, and polymers to protect against seed and soil loss from the elements. Safe Slope will be available in mid-2010. BarriCage is a welded wire gabion system for soil retention and slope stabilization, erosion and flood control at levees and stream banks, and architectural applications.
