Bentley Systems’ WaterGEMS V8 XM allows users to share and collaboratively maintain a single geodatabase by ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Microstation, or the stand-alone program. New features include the Criticality Analysis Center utility that helps identify critical assets in water distribution infrastructure and evaluate the risk associated with their failure. New modeling elements—hydrants, isolation valves, and variable-speed pump batteries—support asset management and hydraulic modeling workflows. Additionally, users can define demands as a function of pressure to model intermittent water supply scenarios, sprinkler heads, and unaccounted-for water. According to Bentley, new geospatial demand allocation methods; unit demand engineering libraries; and global management for simple, composite, and pressure-dependent demands allow users to streamline water consumption estimation.

Water disinfection

Atlantium’s Hydro-Optic Disinfection (HOD) solution can be used as a replacement for chlorine-based drinking water systems and water pasteurizers, according to the company, or it can be used in combination with these systems. The HOD unit places the hydro-optic source—a medium-pressure, high-intensity ultraviolet light—behind a thick quartz window, outside of the water. It injects the light into the water flow without impeding flow, resulting in low head loss and a uniform dose. Additionally, heat is not generated in the water, which eliminates fouling. The quartz-tube chamber acts both as a water pipe and a light trap, reflecting the UV rays back into the water. Separating the electrical mechanism from the wet chamber simplifies lamp replacement and allows water to continue flowing through the system. According to Atlantium, its HOD solution is suited for applications with high volume and flow rates.

Prestressed concrete tanks

DYK designs and builds strand-wrapped, circular, prestressed concrete tanks used in potable water treatment and distribution systems. According to the company, circumferential prestressing with seven-wire strand counteracts bursting loads from the interior liquid and vertical prestressing diminishes vertical bending in the wall and subsequent leaking. "Free" wall base and top connections allow the tank wall to move independently, expanding and contracting relative to the floor and roof, which eliminates stress that otherwise would be transferred to the wall. DYK’s tanks can be constructed partially or fully buried, allowing use of the top of the tank for playgrounds, gardens, or parks. Architectural treatments to the walls of above-ground tanks to reduce their visual impact range from two-tone paint application to precast textured panels.

Reservoir mixing system

Tideflex Technologies says its Tideflex Mixing System (TMS) eliminates stagnation and improves the quality of drinking water in finished water storage reservoirs. The TMS is a combination of patented Tideflex Check Valve technology and a piping manifold that separates the inlet and outlet. The TMS can be installed in new or existing water storage tanks of all shapes and sizes to eliminate stagnation and short-circuiting. Operating on the differential pressure that is already in place, the TMS keeps energy costs low. According to Tideflex, the all-elastomer construction of the Tideflex Check Valve renders the system virtually maintenance free.

Cavitating jet technology

Dynaflow developed water purification, decontamination, and disinfection technology, based on its DynaJets cavitating jets technology, that it says is capable of high-efficiency remediation using low to moderate pump pressures. According to the company, the DynaJets can oxidize organic compounds and reduce microorganisms with energy efficiencies two orders of magnitude larger than those obtained with ultrasonic devices. Cavitating jet systems are based on an inexpensive hydro-mechanical source of cavitation and achieve both removal of microorganisms and reductions in organic pollutants without introducing potentially toxic by-products. Dynaflow says the technology can be used for treating brackish water, groundwater, wastewater, and industrial process water as a stand-alone process or as part of a treatment train such as pre-processing or post-processing for membrane ultrafiltration.
