3D mouse, design and GIS software, and graphics card

3D mouse
3Dconnexion unveiled its newest 3D mouse for design engineers working in 3D applications: the SpacePilot PRO. New features include a color LCD Workflow Assistant, second-generation QuickView Navigation technology, Intelligent Function keys meant to reduce interruptions, and a design meant to enhance comfort and control. According to the company, traditional mice are confined to motion on one flat plane, while 3Dconnexion 3D mice enable design engineers to move in all three dimensions simultaneously, using sensor technology. By gently lifting, pressing, and turning the controller cap, design engineers can easily pan, zoom, and rotate without stopping to select commands. Using a 3D mouse together with a traditional mouse engages both hands into a balanced and cooperative work style.

Swept-path analysis software
Transoft Solutions released the latest version of its vehicle swept-path analysis software, AutoTURN 6.1, which has new features, functions, and upgraded database technology meant to increase compatibility and improve usability. According to Transoft, this new version is compatible with AutoCAD versions 2004 to 2010, MicroStation V8 to V8i, as well as Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, Vista 32 bit, and 64 bit systems, and TORUS Roundabouts and InVision for AutoTURN software. Other improvements highlighted by the company include an updated toolbar developed so designers can view and select tools without having to dig through multiple tabs. The tools within the toolbar, such as the Smartpath tools, have also received improvements. The reverse corner path now allows a reverse sweep angle range of 1° to 160° to give designers more flexibility to cover a greater number of project needs.

Accelerated raytracing system
Caustic Graphics said its massively accelerated raytracing system, CausticRT, achieves breakthrough levels of quality in interactive, cinema-quality 3D computer graphics. Raytracing duplicates the natural physics of light, creating images by tracing the path of light to and throughout any given scene. Light rays naturally scatter (incoherent rays), and tracing and shading them requires memory access to many disparate parts of the scene, a previously impossible caching task. CausticRT is based on an algorithm that addresses this issue and organizes incoherent rays into a data flow that takes advantage of the full computational power of CPUs and GPUs. According to the company, the Caustic development platform, which includes a raytracing accelerator card and SDK, is now available to qualified developers looking to create new or port their existing 3D applications to Caustic and deliver fast, efficient raytracing to their customers.
